CRS-33 carried a reboost demonstration kit — additional propellant and thrusters allowing the Dragon to raise the station's orbit substantially, testing at larger scale the capability that will be needed to deorbit the outpost.
The eventual deorbit vehicle is a heavily modified Dragon with roughly six times the propellant of a standard capsule, contracted to bring the station down in a controlled re-entry after 2030. Demonstrating the thrust and control authority in advance is a necessary step.
There is a certain symmetry in the same vehicle family that resupplied the station being the one that eventually destroys it, and the arrangement reflects how thoroughly the programme's logistics have been handed to commercial providers.
The mission also delivered around 2,300 kilograms of cargo and science hardware, and returned experiment samples in the usual way.
Planning the end of the station is now an active engineering programme rather than a distant consideration, and flights like this one are part of it.
